To make a day of it
Schloss Delitzsch stands in Delitzsch (Landkreis Nordsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 10th century. Adult admission costs 6 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Delitzsch stands in the town centre on the site of an early Slavic stronghold and a later medieval castle, of which only foundations and two vaulted cellars survive. Built over the remains of a moated Gothic fortress, it served the Wettin princes as a travelling residence before being reshaped in Renaissance style for the Electors of Saxony. Its present appearance, marked by the tower's baroque onion dome added in the late 17th century, reflects its final transformation under the Duchy of Sachsen-Merseburg. Today the building houses a museum in the former princely apartments, alongside the town's tourist office and a branch of the regional music school.
What to know
- The building today combines several uses, including a museum, the town's tourist office and a music school, so only part of the site is open to visitors.
- The oldest visible remains, the tower and two vaulted cellars, date from the 14th century rather than the original Slavic settlement.
- The castle sits within the historic town centre of Delitzsch, close to the main street.
- No verified details on opening hours, admission prices or accessibility are currently available.
