In the Landkreis Ravensburg, in Baden-Württemberg, the village of Amtzell is dominated by its castle. From roughly 1370 a timber building on stone foundations occupied the site, gradually giving way over several construction phases to later structures, among them a Baroque transformation ordered in the mid-18th century by the Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg who bore the name Johann Maria Carl Josef. A school and then the local council subsequently occupied the building, a use that accounts for the considerable alterations made to its interior during the 19th century.
