Schloss Zeil rises on a moraine hill above the village of Unterzeil in Leutkirch im Allgäu. The present Renaissance building was erected in the early seventeenth century by Marshal Froben of Waldburg-Zeil, who had the church and the collegiate foundation built first, before replacing the small medieval stronghold that had stood on the site until 1598. The Waldburg-Zeil family still owns the estate today, and a few remains of the older fortress can be seen in the lower courtyard. On clear days the terrace commands a view stretching to the Alps.
