Schauenburg (Schauenburg) stands in Schauenburg (Landkreis Kassel), in Hesse, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Schauenburg is a ruined hilltop castle set on a basalt cone within the Habichtswald nature park, between the villages of Hoof and Breitenbach in the municipality of Schauenburg. Its origins are thought to go back to the early Middle Ages, possibly between 600 and 800, when it may have formed part of a defensive line against the Saxons on the edge of the Frankish realm. Already abandoned and used as a source of building stone by the 16th century, it now survives only as scattered wall remains and vaulted cellars, largely overgrown. Clearance and preservation work carried out since the late 1980s has uncovered parts of the outer walls.
