To make a day of it

Niedensteiner Kopf stands in Niedenstein (Schwalm-Eder-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Niedensteiner Kopf is a 475 metre basalt hill rising above the town of Niedenstein in Hesse, on the site of a medieval stronghold that no longer exists. A fortress was built there around 1160, first recorded in 1254, badly damaged in 1387 and ultimately destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Only scant traces of it remain, and the summit is now marked by a wooden observation tower, the Hessenturm, built in 1931. Today the hill is mainly visited as a hiking destination with wide views over the surrounding countryside.

What to know

  • The hill is mainly visited as a hiking destination, since very little remains of the medieval fortress.
  • The Hessenturm, an 18 metre wooden observation tower, stands on the summit and offers wide views.
  • A small inn at the base of the tower is open on Sundays and public holidays from Easter to the end of October.
  • The summit can now be reached by car since the inn opened, rather than only on foot.
  • The Habichtswaldsteig hiking trail, section H5, passes over the Niedensteiner Kopf.
