To make a day of it
Hohenburg (Homberg) stands in Homberg (Efze) (Schwalm-Eder-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Hohenburg rises above the town of Homberg (Efze) on a wooded basalt outcrop, at the crossing point of two medieval trade routes linking Frankfurt to Eisenach and Fritzlar to Hersfeld. Little remains of the original stronghold, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, apart from ruined walls, a 150-metre-deep well and a lookout tower rebuilt in the twentieth century on the old foundations. Visitors mainly come for the view over the town and the Efze valley, and for the story of a siege that forced thousands of refugees to surrender for lack of water.
What to know
- The site sits on the wooded Schloßberg hill above Homberg (Efze) and can be reached on foot from the town centre.

- The castle well, filled in after the Thirty Years' War, was excavated again between 1997 and 2001 and ranks among the deepest in Germany.
- An inn stands on the former outer bailey of the castle.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
