The Sassenburg is a former earthwork fortification in Lower Saxony, today no more than a fern and pine covered circular rampart on a river dune beside the Aller, near Dannenbüttel. Known for centuries only from a document of 1702, it was first properly investigated in 2021, when excavations dated charred timber remains to between 957 and 999. There is no castle building to visit here, only an open air archaeological site set within a protected natural landscape.
