In Ribbesbüttel, in the Landkreis Gifhorn in Lower Saxony, a working estate stands on the site of a fortified stronghold first recorded in the early 11th century. The medieval Burg, once surrounded by a moat and still shown on a Merian engraving from 1654, no longer survives: the present building, referred to as a Schloss, was erected in 1905 by Bruno Löbbecke, a member of a Brunswick banking family who settled there as a farmer. The estate has remained in family hands across several generations and lies next to a forest burial ground open to visitors.
