To make a day of it

Ruine Schiltach stands in Schiltach (Landkreis Rottweil), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ruine Schiltach sits on a wooded spur 420 metres above sea level, overlooking the old town of Schiltach in the Black Forest. Built before 1250, most likely by the Dukes of Teck to oversee and administer the growing town below, it later served as a stronghold for the Counts of Württemberg before falling into disrepair during the 18th century and being largely dismantled between 1829 and 1830. Only the foundations and a few sections of wall, mainly on the south side, remain today, reached by a wooden footbridge that replaced the original drawbridge. From the site there is a clear view over the rooftops of Schiltach's old town.

What to know

  • Only foundation remains and a few wall fragments survive, there is no standing building to visit.
  • Access is on foot via an uphill path from the old town of Schiltach.
  • A wooden footbridge crosses the former moat where the drawbridge once stood.
  • Benches are set up within the ruined courtyard for a rest stop.
  • A reconstruction of the castle's original appearance can be seen at the museum on the market square in Schiltach.
