To make a day of it

Ruine Hasenfratz stands in Gauselfingen (Zollernalbkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ruine Hasenfratz crowns a rocky spur above the Fehla valley near Gauselfingen, in the Zollernalbkreis. Built in the 13th century, this former noble residence remains one of the most puzzling sites in the Zollernalbkreis: neither its original name, nor its builder, nor its inhabitants have been identified with certainty. Visitors today can see the remains of two towers, sections of rubble-stone walls, and traces of ditches and earthworks that once guarded the approach. Stretching nearly 130 metres in length, it ranks among the largest medieval fortifications in the area.

What to know

  • The site is freely accessible at all times, with no set opening hours.
  • It is reached on foot from the centre of Gauselfingen, following the Lange Gasse and then an uphill forest track.
  • The final stretch climbs for roughly one kilometre before a turn-off leads to the ruin.
  • No roofed structures or visitor facilities remain, only open-air wall and tower remnants.
  • The terrain is uneven, with slopes and rocky outcrops, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
