To make a day of it

Ruine Alt-Ehrenfels stands in Hayingen (Landkreis Reutlingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ruine Alt-Ehrenfels stands on a rocky spur at 610 metres above sea level, at the mouth of the Schweiftal, roughly two kilometres west of Hayingen. Built in the 13th century by the lords of Ehrenfels, it later passed to the lords of Gundelfingen before becoming a hideout for robbers, which led troops of Zwiefalten Abbey to destroy it in 1516. What remains today is the round base of a keep, seven metres in diameter, set on a shield wall, along with faint traces of a neck ditch.

What to know

  • The site lies about two kilometres on foot from Hayingen, over natural, sloping terrain.
  • Only the base of a round keep and faint traces of a ditch remain, with no roofed structure to visit.
  • There are no fixed hours or fees, as this is an open-air ruin.
  • Nearby stands the Schloss Ehrenfels, not to be confused with this older ruin.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable given the forest paths and uneven ground.
