To make a day of it
Ringwallanlage Nack stands in Idstein (Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Ringwallanlage Nack is an earthwork enclosure of banks and ditches that circles the summit of the Nack hill, roughly 400 metres high, between the hamlets of Wörsdorf and Niederauroff northwest of Idstein. The oval rampart runs for about 450 metres east to west and 180 metres north to south, with its southern stretch, over 400 metres long, the best preserved part of the whole circuit. Its date remains unsettled: long attributed to the early medieval Frankish period, finds of apparently Celtic pottery made in 2019 have reopened the question. Visitors find an earthen rampart still traceable through the woods, with no building or visitor facilities of any kind.
What to know
- The site lies in woodland between Wörsdorf and Niederauroff, with no building or visitor facilities.
- It should not be confused with the nearby Burg Holdersberg, located about one kilometre to the south.
- No archaeological excavation has taken place so far, and the exact history of the earthwork remains uncertain.
- Searching or collecting finds requires permission, and chance discoveries must be reported to the heritage authorities.
- The ground follows the natural slope of the Nack hill, so sturdy footwear for a woodland walk is advisable.
