To make a day of it
Burg Königstein stands in Königstein im Taunus (Hochtaunuskreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Königstein rises above the old town of Königstein im Taunus, in Hesse, on a rocky hilltop. Its extensive ruins, among the largest in Germany, bear the marks of centuries of rebuilding, from the twelfth century herringbone masonry to the bastions added by the Archbishop of Mainz in the seventeenth century. Visitors can still make out the thirty four metre keep, raised in stages over time, and the three massive rondels built on the eastern flank during the Renaissance.
What to know
- The site is an open air ruin with uneven ground and stone stairs, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
- The keep can be climbed and gives views over the town and the Taunus hills.
- A town museum displays archaeological finds and a model of the castle.
- Access to the hilltop involves a noticeable climb, so some physical effort should be expected.
