To make a day of it
Schanze Lochmühle stands in Obernhain (Hochtaunuskreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Schanze Lochmühle is a now vanished earthwork fortification hidden in the Taunus forest, roughly two kilometres east of Obernhain within the municipality of Wehrheim. What remains is a square enclosure about twenty-eight metres per side, bounded by a bank and ditch with rounded corners, except on the southern edge where a gap may once have served as an entrance. Its date remains unresolved: some scholars link it to the Napoleonic coalition wars, while others suggest it was a Roman training camp predating the limes, though no finds have confirmed either theory.
What to know
- This is not a castle but an earthwork in the forest, with no standing building or wall to see.
- The site lies off the main paths, about two kilometres from Obernhain, reached by a walk through the woods.
- There are no opening hours or fees, as the site is freely accessible outdoors.
- It is protected as a Bodendenkmal in Hesse, meaning any search or collection of finds requires permission.
- The appeal is mainly archaeological and scenic, with no touristic infrastructure on site.
