To make a day of it

Usinger Schloss stands in Usingen (Hochtaunuskreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 19th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Usinger Schloss stands in the town centre of Usingen, on the site of a 14th-century stronghold later turned into a baroque residence in the 18th century. A major fire destroyed the building in 1873, sparing only a side wing, the so-called Krumme Bau, which was itself pulled down a few years afterwards. In its place a brick building was erected in 1879 and now houses a secondary school, the Christian-Wirth-Schule, so the site is chiefly seen from the outside, around the Schlossplatz and the adjoining garden.

What to know

  • The building houses a working school, the Christian-Wirth-Schule, and cannot be visited inside.
  • Nothing of the original baroque castle survives: the current structure dates from 1879.
  • The Schlossplatz and the adjoining garden remain freely accessible from the outside.
  • The site sits right in the centre of Usingen, an easy walk from the rest of the old town.
