Above the village of Kobern-Gondorf, on a ridge overlooking the Moselle, the Oberburg Kobern stands with the remains of its square bergfried and its outer walls. Built in the early 12th century on ground already fortified in Celtic times, it houses St. Matthias' Chapel, erected around 1220-1240 by the knight Henry II of Isenburg to hold a relic of the head of the Apostle Matthias. Visitors today find the restored keep, scattered wall remains, and this late Romanesque chapel, in a site that has largely remained a ruin.
