To make a day of it

Motte Wiebershausen/Niederscherf stands in Odenthal (Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Motte Wiebershausen, also known as Motte Niederscherf, is the discreet remnant of a small vanished motte castle, close to the Niederscherf farmstead. It survives as an earthen mound still visible in the marshy valley of the Scherfbach, surrounded by a system of ditches and banks that suggests an outer bailey to the east. No structure remains above ground, making this a site to be understood through its landscape rather than viewed as a building.

What to know

  • The site lies in open countryside southeast of the hamlet of Wiebershausen, in a wetland area.
  • No standing building remains: only the mound and traces of the ditch system can be seen on the ground.
  • A visit amounts to a walk to observe the earthworks, with no known visitor facilities.
  • The ground around the mound stays marshy, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • The motte is thought to have originated as the older seat of the lords of Scherf, first recorded in 1216.
