To make a day of it
Ilsestein stands in Ilsenburg (Landkreis Harz), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Ilsestein is a granite rock formation in the Harz mountains, rising above the Ilse valley near Ilsenburg in Saxony-Anhalt. A small royal stronghold stood here in the 11th century under King Henry IV, before being torn down as early as 1105 by opponents of the emperor acting on orders from Pope Paschal II. Excavations carried out between 1955 and 1962 traced the layout of that fortification, though nothing of the structure remains visible today. Visitors climb the rock chiefly for the iron cross erected in 1814 in memory of soldiers killed during the Napoleonic wars of liberation, and for the view stretching toward the Brocken and the valley below.
