Hohes Hospital (Soest) stands in Soest (Kreis Soest), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Hohes Hospital in Soest refers to the remains of a massive residential keep built around the year 1000 on the site of a former cemetery, right next to St. Peter's Church. This imposing structure, 25 metres square, served as a residence for the archbishops of Cologne before becoming, from 1178, a hospital and later a residence for unmarried young women. All that survives of the original building today is a single stretch of wall, locally known as the Wittekindsmauer, which was spared during the demolition of 1809/1810 because it supported neighbouring half-timbered houses.
What to know
- Only a single stretch of wall survives on site, there is no complete building to explore.
- Part of the wall can be seen freely from the street, another part is only accessible inside the adjoining savings bank branch.
- The site sits in the centre of Soest, right next to St. Peter's Church.
- As no opening hours or fees are set for this ruin, viewing the indoor section depends on the bank's own business hours.
