To make a day of it

Hinterburg (Tengen) stands in Tengen (Landkreis Konstanz), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 12th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Hinterburg is a ruined hilltop castle standing on a narrow rocky spur above the town of Tengen, in Baden-Württemberg. Built around 1150 by the lords of Tengen, it originally formed a single stronghold with the castle further down the ridge before the two were split apart in a territorial division around 1275. Destroyed twice during the 15th century, the site was later quarried for stone until roughly the mid-19th century. Only the keep remains today, shorter than its original height but still standing on its square base.

What to know

  • Only the keep survives from the medieval complex, now about 20 metres high compared to its original 32 metres.
  • The site sits on a narrow rocky ridge at 610 metres altitude, meaning some uphill walking is required to reach it.
  • No verified information is available on opening times, admission fees or facilities for access.
  • The ruin lies right next to the old town of Tengen, which was itself laid out as a planned settlement in the 13th century.
