To make a day of it

Ruine Hohenhewen stands in Engen (Landkreis Konstanz), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ruine Hohenhewen crowns a volcanic cone above Engen, in the Hegau region, at an elevation of 846 metres. Around 1170 the lords of Engen built a stronghold there, later taking the name of lords of Hewen and ruling the area for nearly four centuries. Burned down in 1639 during the Bavarian siege of the Thirty Years' War, the site now preserves only scattered remains, reached by a climb from the neighbouring hamlets. A lookout tower at the summit extends the view over the Hegau, Lake Constance and, on clear days, the Alps.

What to know

  • The climb from the Almenhütte car park in Anselfingen involves about 300 metres of ascent, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
  • The site is open at all times, with no fixed hours or admission fee.
  • Only scattered remains of the medieval stronghold survive, the main appeal being the panoramic view from the summit and its lookout tower.
  • A free car park is located near the Almenhütte, the usual starting point for the walk.
  • Barbecue spots are available both at the Almenhütte and on the Hohenhewen itself.
