To make a day of it

Hildenburg stands in Hausen (Landkreis Rhön-Grabfeld), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Hildenburg is a medieval ruin overlooking the hamlet of Hillenberg, near Hausen in the Rhön-Grabfeld district of Bavaria. Its origins may date back to the 8th century, but it is the events of the 16th century that mark its history most: peasants from Bastheim reportedly destroyed it in 1525 during the German Peasants' War, believing Martin Luther was hiding there. Today a well-preserved keep remains, around three metres deep with walls roughly two metres thick, along with the foundations of the surrounding wall that still enclose the farmsteads of the hamlet. Local legend holds that a tunnel once linked the castle to the nearby Frauenhöhle cave, through which a noblewoman is said to have fled a siege with her maids and treasures.
