To make a day of it

Hutsburg stands in Rhönblick (Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Hutsburg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin set on the Hutsberg, a 639-metre basalt cone overlooking the Herpf valley near Helmershausen, in the municipality of Rhönblick. First documented in 1273, it had become a haunt for robber knights before being captured and destroyed around 1275 by Count Berthold of Henneberg-Schleusingen with support from the cities of Erfurt, Nuremberg and Würzburg. Rebuilt in 1383 as a strategic outpost of the Counts of Henneberg, it was finally razed by rebelling peasants on 13 May 1525. What remains today are substantial stretches of the ring wall and a large residential building from the 14th century.

What to know

  • The ruin sits on top of the Hutsberg, so reaching it involves climbing up from the valley.
  • Access right up to the outer walls is currently blocked by a fence put up by the forestry authority, limiting close inspection.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Thuringia.
  • No opening hours, admission fee or visitor facilities are indicated on site.
