To make a day of it

Herrenhaus Rustenhof stands in Brakel (Kreis Höxter), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Rustenhof is a former noble residence set slightly above a valley, away from the village of Istrup, in the municipality of Brakel. First recorded in 1372 as a widow's dower property granted to the wife of the knight Hermann von Brakel, it later belonged to the life-estate holdings of the lordship of Hinnenburg, which passed by inheritance from the von Brakel family to the von der Asseburg family. The present building, constructed of rubble stone under a hipped roof, rises only one storey above a tall base floor, and a projecting latrine turret suggests that remnants of earlier structures may survive within it. An avenue leads to the nearby St Bartholomew's chapel, whose portal bears the date 1723.
