To make a day of it

Schloss Niesen stands in Willebadessen (Kreis Höxter), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Niesen stands in Willebadessen, in the Kreis Höxter, on the site of a medieval moated house belonging to the von Nyhusen family, first recorded in 1262. The present baroque manor house, built between 1703 and 1704, replaced the older fortified residence after the Bocholtz family had the remaining medieval structures torn down in the early 19th century. Rebuilt on a smaller scale following a fire in 1951, the house is set within a landscape park of about three hectares, with mature trees, ponds, waterfalls and grottoes. Its garden front, flanked by two short wings, opens onto a terrace topped by a balcony.

What to know

  • The house remains privately owned, by the von Elverfeldt family, which limits access to parts of the property.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees are published for this site.
  • The roughly three-hectare landscape park, with its ponds and grottoes, is among the best-preserved parts of the estate.
  • The building seen today is a 1950s reconstruction, smaller than the original baroque house destroyed by fire in 1951.
