Haus zum Haus stands in Ratingen Mitte (Kreis Mettmann), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg zum Haus stands on the banks of the Anger stream in Ratingen, on the site of an earlier fortified mound destroyed by fire in the 12th century. The present structure, built around 1276 for the von Haus family and extended in 1474 and again in the 16th century, consists of an outer bailey and a main castle, each once surrounded by a water-filled moat, only partly preserved today. Three round towers and a square gate tower remain, including a south tower with walls three metres thick that served purely defensive purposes, while the others were used for living quarters or storage. Restored from 1973 by architect Bruno Lambart, who added modern extensions that blend closely with the older fabric, the castle now houses a cultural centre, a restaurant, housing and offices.
What to know
- The outer bailey grounds are freely accessible day and night, while the main castle courtyard is generally open during the day and at least during restaurant hours.
- The site combines heritage and contemporary uses, with a cultural centre, a restaurant, an architecture office and private housing, which limits visits to certain outdoor areas.
- The main approach is from the south, across a bridge leading through a stone gateway, long the only access to the castle.
- No opening hours, admission fees or visit duration are published for a formal tour of the site.
