To make a day of it
Haus Graven stands in Langenfeld (Kreis Mettmann), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
In Wiescheid, a district of Langenfeld, Haus Graven stands on a site bordered by water on three sides, its U-shaped structure built of quarry stone. What remains today is the outer bailey, rebuilt in the 17th century after damage from the Thirty Years' War, with square corner towers under pyramidal roofs. An alliance coat of arms dated 1656 above the portal recalls the union of the von Velbrück and von den Reven families, who owned the estate at the time. The main residential building, once standing southeast of the entrance, was demolished at the end of the 18th century.
What to know
- Only the 17th century outer bailey survives, the main residential wing having been demolished in 1790.
- A local support association runs the site and maintains a permanent exhibition on its history in one of the towers.
- Since 2020 the property has belonged to the town of Langenfeld, after a long period in private hands.
- A municipal environmental and climate education centre has also been based here since 2021.
- Wide moats still surround the site on three sides.
