To make a day of it

Motte Zoppesmur stands in Leichlingen (Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Motte Zoppesmur, also known as Motte Zobbesmur or Burg Leysiefen, is a medieval earthwork castle in the Leysiefen hamlet, on the left bank of the Wupper river in Leichlingen. What remains today is a mound roughly fifty metres across and about eight metres high, with traces of a surrounding wall and an earthen rampart on the valley side. Built around 1200 by the Zobbe family of ministerial knights, it passed to Count Adolf V of Berg in 1280 and was apparently abandoned soon after. The site, now a wooded mound, inspired local legends of robbers and hidden treasure.

What to know

  • Only the fortified mound and a few masonry fragments remain of the castle; nothing has been rebuilt.
  • The site lies close to the Leysiefen hamlet, about 200 metres from the left bank of the Wupper river.
  • Visiting means walking around a wooded mound, with no documented facilities or signage.
  • Access is outdoors and unrestricted, with no recorded opening hours or admission fee.
  • The sloping terrain makes the site unsuitable for visitors with limited mobility.
