To make a day of it

Festung Rothenberg stands in Schnaittach (Landkreis Nürnberger Land), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Rothenberg Fortress crowns a 588 metre ridge of the Franconian Jura above Schnaittach. An earlier medieval castle stood here from the early 14th century before Elector Charles VII had it rebuilt between 1729 and 1750 into a baroque stronghold with star shaped bastions, following French military engineering principles. Abandoned by the Bavarian army in the 19th century and later stripped of its materials, it now stands as an extensive brick ruin that includes underground casemates open to visitors. The grounds also preserve traces of a small medieval town that once grew up beneath the walls.

  • A visit means walking through open ruins rather than furnished historic rooms.
  • A cemetery holding more than a thousand burials lies just south of the fortress ruins.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
