To make a day of it
Burg Hartenstein stands in Hartenstein (Landkreis Nürnberger Land), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Hartenstein stands on a hilltop above the village of Hartenstein in Franconian Bavaria. Likely founded in the 13th century by the imperial ministerial family of Neidstein, it later passed to the Schenk von Reicheneck and then to the House of Wittelsbach, with major extensions carried out in the early 16th century under Ludwig von Eyb the Younger. Outer fortifications added in the late 17th century were destroyed after the castle was taken during the War of the Spanish Succession. The main building now houses an exhibition on knighthood in Franconia.
What to know
- The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
- The site has belonged to the municipality of Hartenstein since 2002, after centuries of private ownership by the Haunhorst family.
- A permanent exhibition on Franconian knighthood occupies the upper floors of the main building.
- Its hilltop position means a walk uphill from the village is needed to reach it.
