To make a day of it

Burgstall Bittelschieß stands in Krauchenwies (Landkreis Sigmaringen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Bittelschieß no longer exists: this site near the village of Bittelschieß, in the municipality of Krauchenwies, marks the location of a medieval stronghold that has since disappeared. The lords of Bittelschieß, first recorded in 1083, had their seat here, likely from the 12th century onward. Gravel extraction during the 20th century gradually wore away almost the entire hill on which the fortification once stood, so that no visible remains survive today. Only a local street name, the Burgstraße, still recalls the former stronghold.

What to know

  • No visible remains of the stronghold survive, as the site was leveled by gravel quarrying during the 20th century.
  • There are no opening hours, admission fees, or visitor facilities for this location.
  • Only local street names, such as Burgstraße, help identify the approximate former location.
  • This site mainly appeals to those interested in local history or archaeology rather than a conventional sightseeing visit.
