The Burgruine Leuchtenberg crowns the summit of the Leuchtenberg hill at 585 metres and ranks among the largest and best preserved castle ruins in the Upper Palatinate. Much of what stands today dates from a rebuilding around 1300 under Landgrave Ulrich I, following earlier fortifications on the same spot. Visitors can see the ring of outer defences with fifteenth century wall towers, together with the remains of the keep, half of which collapsed in the nineteenth century. The inner courtyard still hosts open air theatre performances.
