To make a day of it

Burg Warburg (Niedersachsen) stands in Schöningen (Landkreis Helmstedt), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Warburg, also called Alte Burg Warberg, is an early medieval motte site on the eastern slope of the Elm range near Warberg, within the municipality of Schöningen. Built around 1100 by the noble von Hagen family, it was stormed and destroyed in 1200 during a punitive campaign tied to the succession struggle between the Welfs and the Hohenstaufens. Today only a horseshoe-shaped system of ramparts and ditches survives, hidden under forest, which excavations in the 1960s helped to document in detail. Visitors come for the quiet setting and the still-legible outline of the fortification rather than for any standing remains.

What to know

  • The site lies in woodland on the eastern slope of the Elm, roughly two kilometres southwest of Warberg, reached via a forest track.
  • No standing building survives, only earthen ramparts and ditches forming a still visible U-shaped layout.
  • An information sign marks the location of the ramparts, about fifty metres off the main path.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • A visit is essentially a woodland walk rather than a tour of a built monument.
