To make a day of it

Burg Sulz stands in Kirchberg an der Jagst (Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Sulz survives only as an archaeological site today, roughly half a kilometre northeast of Schloss Kirchberg and the old town of Kirchberg an der Jagst. Built around 1103 by the lords of Sulz on a spur above the Jagst river, it formed part of a defensive line, together with Burg Kirchberg and Burg Hornberg, guarding the salt road from Hall to Rothenburg at a river ford. The castle was destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War and was never rebuilt. What remains are collapsed cellar vaults and defensive ditches, set in open countryside.

What to know

  • This is not a castle to visit in the usual sense: only buried remains and ditches survive on the ground.
  • The site lies in open countryside on a rocky spur and requires walking over unprepared terrain.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since this is a vanished ruin without tourist infrastructure.
  • The nearby Schloss in Kirchberg an der Jagst, about 500 metres away, can be combined with a visit.
