To make a day of it

Burg Leofels stands in Ilshofen (Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Leofels stands on a rocky spur above the Jagst valley, where the hamlet bearing its name now lies, within the municipality of Ilshofen. Built during the reign of Emperor Frederick II, around 1240 to 1250, this ruin still preserves a shield wall with bossed ashlar stones dating from around 1230, evidence of its former defensive strength. Its keep, however, was dismantled as early as the 18th century. The site now hosts open air theatre performances and concerts during the summer months.

What to know

  • The site is an open air ruin, with no roofed rooms or indoor areas to visit.
  • A full restoration of the ruin took place between 2013 and 2016.
  • In summer, theatre performances and concerts are held on site, which may affect access on certain dates.
  • The hamlet of Leofels, surrounding the ruin, sits on high ground above the Jagst valley, so reaching it involves an uphill walk from the valley floor.
