Burg Steinenschloss stands in Thaleischweiler-Fröschen (Landkreis Südwestpfalz), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Steinenschloss is a medieval ruin overlooking the confluence of the Schwarzbach and Rodalb streams, near Thaleischweiler-Fröschen. Built around 1100, likely by the Counts of Leiningen, it was destroyed by fire as early as the 12th century and never rebuilt. The site is notable for its massive round tower from the Salian-Staufer period, one of the largest of its kind still standing in Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as remains of a bent shield wall to the north. Decades of excavation and clearing work have allowed the surrounding wall, the residential hall and the fortified lower gate to be restored.
What to know
- The site is an open-air ruin that can be visited freely, without set opening hours.
- Reaching the upper castle requires walking up a path to the rocky plateau.
- The rebuilt round tower, now around ten metres high, is the most visible feature from a distance.
- Clearing and restoration work is ongoing, carried out by a local heritage association, so some structures remain only partially visible.
- The ground is uneven and rocky, so sturdy footwear suited to woodland walking is recommended.
