To make a day of it

Burg Altdahn stands in Dahn (Landkreis Südwestpfalz), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on October 13, 2026.

Altdahn Castle is a ruined fortress set on a rocky ridge above the town of Dahn in the Palatinate. Together with the neighbouring castles of Grafendahn and Tanstein, it forms a rare group of three strongholds built along the same rock crest, an arrangement echoed in the Vosges of Alsace. Shaped by repeated sieges, fires and a rockfall in 1820, the remains include a lower ward guarded by two horseshoe-shaped towers and an upper ward with a surviving wall of the palas and a watchtower. A small on-site museum displays finds from the ruins, including a silver spoon bearing the coat of arms of the lords of Dahn.

What to know

  • The ruin belongs to a group of three castles, together with Grafendahn and Tanstein, linked by paths along the same rocky ridge.
  • Visiting means walking over uneven, rocky ground with narrow passages between the different rock outcrops.
  • The small on-site museum can only be visited by prior telephone arrangement and charges an entry fee, while access to the ruin itself is free.
  • Part of the palas collapsed in a rockfall in 1820, which explains the fragmentary state of the upper ward.
  • No opening hours, prices or accessibility information are published for the ruin itself, so it is worth checking locally or by phone before visiting.
