The Burghalder is a rock formation above the village of Hauenstein, in Rhineland-Palatinate, carrying the faint remains of a former hilltop fortification. Excavations carried out in 1972 uncovered traces of a ditch and a few wall fragments, dated by pottery finds to somewhere between the 10th and 12th centuries. No written historical record confirms that a castle ever stood here, so its existence rests solely on archaeological evidence. Today the site is visited mainly for its viewpoint and as a rock climbing spot rather than as a built monument.
