Burg Schwabsburg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle standing on a rocky spur at roughly 120 metres above sea level, encircled by the Schwabsburg district of the town of Nierstein. Founded around 1210 as an outpost of Hohenstaufen power along the Rhine, it was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and later torn down following an auction in 1799. Only the keep, also known as the Rabenturm, and remnants of the surrounding wall survive today. From the top of the keep, reached via an internal staircase, visitors can look out over the Rhine plain, Nierstein and the nearby vineyards.

What to know

  • Only the keep, known as the Rabenturm, is open to visitors, with an internal staircase leading up to a viewing platform.
  • The climb involves a spiral steel staircase installed in the 1960s, followed by a steeper stone flight near the top.
  • The summit platform is enclosed by a metal railing and offers views over the Rhine plain and surrounding vineyards.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are given in the available information.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Rhineland-Palatinate.
