To make a day of it
Burg Fürstenberg stands in Oberdiebach (Landkreis Mainz-Bingen), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Fürstenberg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a triangular rocky spur above the Gailsbach valley, near Oberdiebach in Rhineland-Palatinate. Begun in the early 13th century and extended over the following two hundred years with outer wards and a three-quarter-round tower, it still shows a massive keep, a thick shield wall and the remains of the residential hall. Destroyed during the War of the Palatine Succession, the site has been under restoration since the 1990s, led by a private owner working with regional heritage authorities. Visitors cross a bridge over a rock-cut ditch to reach the ruin, and a viewing terrace looks out over the vineyards and the Rhine valley.
What to know
- The site is a ruin still under restoration, so visitors should expect uneven ground and exposed old masonry.
- Access is via a bridge over a rock-cut ditch, followed by a climb to the summit plateau.
- No verified information is available on opening hours or admission fees.
- The visit suits those looking for a picturesque ruin rather than a fully restored, visitor-oriented monument.
- The neighbouring vineyard estate, under the same ownership, is not part of the ruin visit itself.
