To make a day of it

Böhmische Burg Astheim stands in Astheim (Landkreis Groß-Gerau), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Böhmische Burg Astheim survives only as an archaeological site, set apart from the village of Astheim on the bank of a former arm of the Rhine. Likely built in the 14th century as a fortified house or tower surrounded by a moat, it is thought to have served as a toll station and as a watch post defending imperial interests and the city of Frankfurt against the ambitions of the Archbishops of Mainz. Destroyed by the mid 15th century, it left behind little more than an old limestone loading ramp and traces of a moat, visible only at low water.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains, only traces visible on the ground when the water level is low
  • The site lies isolated, away from the village of Astheim, beside a former arm of the Rhine
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is an open archaeological site
  • Visiting means walking to a historic location rather than touring a preserved building
