To make a day of it

Burg Scharfenberg stands in Brilon (Hochsauerlandkreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Scharfenberg no longer exists: nothing remains of this medieval stronghold built around 1300 near Brilon, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Standing on the disputed border between the prince-bishops of Cologne and the counts of Waldeck, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times before falling into ruin by the late 17th century. The site was later quarried for stone in the 18th century, leaving no visible trace of the walls; only a memorial stone now marks the former moat.

What to know

  • No remains of the burg are visible today, only a memorial stone marks the site.
  • The location lies near the village of Scharfenberg, now part of the town of Brilon.
  • This is not a monument to tour in the usual sense but an open-air memorial site.
  • A later manor house was built nearby in the late 18th century, but it is separate from the burg site.
  • No admission fees, opening hours or accessibility details apply, since the structure itself has disappeared.
