To make a day of it

Burg Rogätz stands in Rogätz (Landkreis Börde), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Rogätz survives today through a single tangible remnant: the Klutturm, a medieval tower standing on the steep bank of the Elbe, where the Ohre river joins it, between Magdeburg and Tangermünde. For nearly five centuries the site was the seat of the von Alvensleben family, who turned it into a stronghold and later a Renaissance residence, before the Thirty Years' War reduced it to ashes in 1626. Nothing remains of the castle's four wings, but the tower, traces of the old fortifications, and the parish church set within the former castle chapel still bear witness to this past.

What to know

  • The former castle chapel, turned into the village parish church after the Reformation, still holds gravestones and a baptismal font linked to the former lords.
