To make a day of it

Burg Mengerskirchen stands in Mengerskirchen (Landkreis Limburg-Weilburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Mengerskirchen Castle, known today as Schloss Mengerskirchen, stands along the former town wall of the Hessian community that bears its name. Construction began around 1312, likely under the Dillenburg branch of the House of Nassau, and the building later served as a widow's residence, an administrative seat, and a town school before becoming today's town hall. Its oldest surviving part is a fourteenth-century residential tower, where late Gothic frescoes were uncovered during restoration work, while the courtyard side shows an open gallery wing with Tuscan-columned arcades.

What to know

  • Since 1983 the building has housed the municipal administration and a community hall, so only parts of it are open to visitors.
  • The tower has held a local history museum since 1990.
  • Remnants of the old town fortifications survive near the castle, though part of the wall was demolished in 1970 for an extension.
  • The former moat has been turned into a park, providing a pleasant area to walk around the building.
