To make a day of it

Burg Lotenberg stands in Eschenbach (Landkreis Göppingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Lotenberg has long since vanished, but its former site remains visible atop the Lotenberg hill near Eschenbach, at an elevation of 490 metres. Likely built in the 13th century by the Dukes of Teck as an administrative stronghold, it survives today only as an archaeological trace of mounds and ditches. A mound roughly 60 metres across and 4 metres high, once protected on three sides by a rampart and ditch, still marks where the castle stood. Visitors come here more for the landscape and history than for standing ruins.

What to know

  • No standing buildings remain, only a mound and visible ditch traces in the landscape.
  • The site sits at the highest point of the Lotenberg hill, meaning an uphill walk is needed to reach it.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is an open-air site with no tourist infrastructure.
  • The visit suits those interested in medieval archaeology or hiking in the Göppingen area.
