To make a day of it
Burg Lißberg stands in Ortenberg (Wetteraukreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Lissberg Castle stands in ruins atop the central cone of an old volcanic crater, in the Lißberg district of Ortenberg. Its round keep, topped with a conical point locally nicknamed the cabbage barrel, remains visible from afar and is the best preserved part of the site. A thick shield wall and a trapezoid inner courtyard still trace the outline of the former medieval stronghold, most of which has collapsed apart from the tower.
What to know
- The 27-metre keep can be climbed as a viewing tower only by prior arrangement.
- The remaining castle buildings are ruined and are not open for a formal visit.
- The keep's entrance sits nine metres above ground, a reminder that a drawbridge was once needed to reach it.
- The village hall built on the site of the former dwelling now hosts medieval markets and private events.
- As no fixed opening hours or fees exist, it is worth checking locally before visiting.
