To make a day of it

Burg Glauburg stands in Glauberg (Glauberg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Glauburg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle on a basalt ridge of the Glauberg, southeast of the village of Glauburg in Hesse. The plateau had already carried a large Frankish stronghold from the 7th to 9th centuries before the Staufer dynasty incorporated a fortification here into their defensive network of the Wetterau region during the 12th and 13th centuries. Visitors can still see a tower-like building set against the rampart, its rubble-stone ground floor pierced by a Romanesque arch, along with the foundations of medieval houses and a cistern. The site was the ancestral seat of the Frankfurt patrician family Glauburg, first documented in 1247.

What to know

  • The site sits in the open air on a plateau at the top of the Glauberg, reached by a climbing path.
  • What remains are ruins and partially reconstructed foundations, not a furnished or habitable castle.
  • The terrain involves walking and some elevation gain, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • No opening hours, admission fees, or accessibility details are confirmed, so it is worth checking locally before visiting.
