To make a day of it

Burg Hollende stands in Warzenbach (Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Hollende is a ruined medieval castle perched on a small rocky spur above the Aubach valley, between the villages of Warzenbach and Treisbach. Built before the 11th century on imperial land, it served as the seat of the Gisonen counts and was caught up in a turbulent history of political intrigue and warfare. Today only the remains of a rectangular enclosure wall and a central tower survive, marking the site of a fortress wiped out in the 13th century.

What to know

  • The site lies isolated in woodland, on a height between Warzenbach and Treisbach, reached only on foot.
  • Only fragments of walls and foundations remain, with no visitor facilities or staff on site.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air ruin freely accessible to all.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable given the wooded, sloping terrain leading to the ruin.
  • The site will mainly appeal to those interested in medieval history and sparse remains rather than a restored castle experience.
