To make a day of it
Burgstall Brungershausen stands in Brungershausen (Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf), in Hesse, Germany. Recorded dating: 7th century. No visits are on record for this building.
Burgstall Brungershausen refers to the buried remains of a former lowland castle, now vanished, near the hamlet of Brungershausen in Hesse. Built in the 8th century and extended between the 10th and 13th centuries, it once included ditches, walls, stone buildings and a massive tower, before falling out of use as early as the 13th century. No standing structure survives: the site, rediscovered through aerial photography in 1992, lies on land still used for farming and grazing. It is therefore not a monument to walk through but an archaeological research site, its outline only traceable through soil marks and vegetation.
What to know
- No standing ruins exist above ground; only subtle traces in the terrain and vegetation mark the former castle site.
- The land is part of a working farm, used as cropland or pasture, which limits casual access.
- The site was identified in 1992 through aerial photography and has since been studied by a research team from the University of Marburg.
- There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this remains primarily an archaeological research site.
- The area lies just west of the present-day village of Brungershausen, along the Warzenbach stream.
