Burg Hohenstein sits on a rocky spur of the Taunus above Bad Schwalbach and ranks among the largest castle ruins in the region. Built between 1190 and 1230 by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, it became their residence from 1260 and was enlarged in the early 15th century. Visitors can still see the two shield walls, the outer one in late Gothic style and the inner one dating from the 13th century, each flanked by a pair of towers, while the former residential buildings vanished after the collapse of the palas in 1864.
